Temple at Edfu

This is the innermost part of the temple and only the king and high priest were allowed in. As you get inside the five parts of the temple it gets smaller and darker, and higher up. This meant that the god could see all the way out but the people could not see in. There used to be a big gold statue of Horus but it was stolen in ancient times. The boat was carried at festivals (this is a copy, the original is in the Louvre) like the celebration of the beautiful meeting when Horus was carried to meet his wife Hathor at the river bank and they were brought back to his temple.
