We got him a dummy because he gets himself so worked up and was making himself worse. It seems to help. I hope it's not a fight to get it back off him later.
Update - Matthew has decided a dummy isn't going to cut it anymore. It worked a grand total of two times before he got wise to it! It's a shame it doesn't work when he's upset but if I'm honest I'm really glad, as I'd hate to have him get attached to it and then have to fight to take it away from him later. Each to their own, but you see these big toddlers around with dummies after they've long outgrown them and I don't like it, personally, although I can appreciate why it's useful. One day he'll find his thumb and then we'll need to hope he grows out of that anyway - we can't take his thumb away!!!
